[ Introduction ]

Today AMD is replenishing its ranks with five “new” processors, which include an ultra affordable dual-core model and a modestly priced hexa-core processor. The most interesting processor included in this new release is the Phenom II X6 1075T which will be situated between the 1055T and 1090T Black Edition processors in terms of price and performance.

However the release will also bring four new flagship processors to the Phenom II X4, Phenom II X2 and Athlon II X4 and Athlon II X2 families. That said, each processor only provides a 100MHz speed bump over its predecessor, which in some cases works out to be just a 3% frequency gain. Still, the good news is none of these flagship models will be introduced at a new price point, rather they will take over from existing models, effectively pushing them down in price.

Take the new Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition processor for example, which operates at 3.50GHz and features an unlocked multiplier. A few months ago the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition was priced at $185 US and has recently been discounted to $165, as we are expecting the new 970 model to come in at the old price point. This will be the theme for most of the processors released today, meaning that those looking at building the top model from any of these series will be getting a slight performance increase for free.

The other processors being released today include the Phenom II X2 560 Black Edition (3.30GHz), Athlon II X4 645 (3.1GHz) and the Athlon II X2 265 (3.3GHz). Therefore with the exception of the Phenom II X6 1075T, these processors are all priced below $200 US.

Already AMD has a fairly firm grip on the sub $200 US CPU price bracket and these new processors should help improve their position even further. Given that we have previously covered the Phenom II and Athlon II architecture quite extensively, we are not going to go over it again. Instead let’s move on to the benchmark results...

Bottomline is if you are looking for a "budget" or maybe a "limited budget" build, AMD is a good choice.

Its a shame AMD could not gain a little more ground on Intel :(

The PIIX4 955 is a weapon for the price but I really want to see AMD providing Intel with more of a challenge. Fingers crossed for the next generation I guess!!!
