[ Introduction ]

Today we are taking a look at a powerful yet affordable 4-bay NAS from Asustor. Known as the AS5104T it features an Intel Celeron quad-core processor, plenty of memory, dual Gigabit LAN and much more. Designed for power users and business applications, the AS5104T can handle whatever you have in store...

Asustor has quickly emerged as a key player in the network attached storage business. Late last year we reviewed the AS7004T which became the most powerful 4-bay NAS on the market. As part of the AS70xxT series, the AS7004T was also accompanied by the AS7008T and massive ten bay AS7010T.

As impressed as we were with the AS7004T, it wasn’t exactly what we would call affordable at $1100.

The next step down was the AS-604T, though that particular model was getting a bit long in the tooth and with a current asking price of $680 was a pretty poor choice given the market. That being the case Asustor came up with the AS51xxT series which features 2, 4, 8 and 10 bay models. All four models are armed with an Intel Celeron 2.0GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of DDR3L memory, two USB 3.0 ports, two eSATA ports, dual Gigabit LAN and a HDMI output.

When compared to the Core i3 powered AS7004T, the AS5104T costs less than half as much at roughly $510 which is surprising given the only real difference between the two is the processor.

That said when it comes to Celeron "Bay Trail-D" powered NAS devices there is quite a lot of competition and in fact last year one of our favourite 4-bay models, the QNAP TS-451, was based on the Celeron J1800 which is essentially a dual-core version of the processor found in today’s review item.

Priced at $480 the TS-451 is hard to beat, though if the AS5104T does come in at around $510 it might just knock the TS-451 off its pedestal.

With that in mind let’s move on to see how the AS5104T is put together...

This model also isn't for sale just like the AS7004T, what gives?
