[ Introduction ]

Today we are checking out the flagship model of the Asustor 2 series which is designed for home multimedia usage. The series features four products, there are a pair of 2-bay models as well as two 4-bay models and we will be looking at the AS-204TE. Armed with an Intel Atom processor and 1GB of DDR3 memory the AS-204TE isn’t that dissimilar to the expensive AS-604T...

When compared to the more expensive higher-end models the AS-204TE has been downgraded with a slower clocked Atom processor. That said it has been given some upgrades as well that help make this a multimedia focused NAS. Features such as HDMI 1.4a mean that the AS-204TE can be connected directly to your TV to serve as a HTPC replacement, something few NAS devices can do.

As we mentioned there are two 4-bay models in the new Asustor 2 series and they are quite different. Although the standard AS-204T model comes with the same Atom processor, the DDR3 memory capacity has been halved to just 512MB.

However most importantly is that while the AS-204TE is a multimedia server the AS-204T is a budget data storage server. This means the AS-204T drops support for the HDMI output as well as the infrared receiver.

The difference in price isn’t that substantial with the AS-204T costing $480 and the AS-204TE $540, just 13% more for twice as much memory and a heap of extra features. With the AS-204TE being the better deal of the two, let’s move on to check it out in greater detail...

I have been tossing up between the AS-304T, QNAP TS-469L and now this the AS-204TE. Based on what I have seen here the 204TE is looking like the best option thanks.
