[ Introduction ]

Today we are checking out the 6-bay AS-606T NAS (Network Attached Storage) device from new comer Asustor. The name Asustor is very similar to Asus and that is no accident, as it is a subsidiary of Asus which focus solely on NAS and video surveillance products. With so many new competitors joining the NAS market, we were keen to see what Asustor had to offer...

Like numerous others Asus has obviously realized the potential of the NAS market which has rapidly grown over the past few years. Although a little embarrassing now, I have to admit when I reviewed my first quality NAS product back in 2007, the Synology Cube Station CS407e, I never really expected these desktop NAS servers to become as mainstream as they have.

Of course even back then network attached storage was not a new concept and I myself had put together many PC servers designed to play a similar role to that of today’s desktop NAS products.

Back when I reviewed the Cube Station CS407e it was possible to build a desktop PC for less, as this 4-bay NAS cost around $550. For the same money the desktop PC was not only much faster but it was also far more flexible when it came to what software could be used.

The advantage of the Cube Station CS407e was that it consumed far less power, featured a more elegant design, was more compact and perhaps above all extremely easy to setup and use, making it ideal for SOHO use.

Over the years these NAS products have grown more powerful, more feature packed, and even easier to setup and use. These are likely the reasons for the relatively quick adoption of dedicated desktop NAS solutions and why companies like Asustor are being formed.

Although Asustor is a subsidiary of Asus and therefore should have all the necessary resources at its disposal, creating a product that can compare with the likes of Synology and QNAP is no easy task. With years of experience already behind them their product lines are well evolved and well supported. Keeping that in mind, let’s move on to check the Asustor AS-606T in greater detail...
