[ Introduction ]

Today we are checking out two new Gainward graphics cards from their elite Phantom series, based on Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 980 GPUs. Armed with the third generation Phantom cooler, these new graphics cards are designed to be the coolest, quietest and most powerful options available to gamers...

Since the release of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 two months ago, much has changed in the GPU industry. At the time the newly minted GTX 980 and GTX 970 were to face the then $400 Radeon R9 290 and $500 R9 290X.

After a round of benchmarking in the latest games it became clear that the GTX 970 was able to match the Radeon R9 290X for a fraction of the cost, while the GTX 980 delivered an entirely new level of performance.

With no further 2014 releases on the cards for AMD things looked desperate, and in times of desperation you can always count on AMD to do one thing, slash prices.

The Radeon R9 290 was dropped from $400 to $300 (10% cheaper than the GTX 970), the R9 290X moved from $550 to $400. However pricing continued to fall and it is now possible to purchase the Radeon R9 290X for as little as $370 and the R9 290 just $280.

This new pricing structure completely changes things, as this means the Radeon R9 290X now does battle with the GeForce GTX 970, while the GTX 980 is priced well above AMD’s single-GPU flagship part.

Giving us a chance to revisit this high-end GPU battle is Gainward, with their elite Phantom series graphics cards. Both the GTX 970 and GTX 980 Phantom cards are armed with the latest Gainward Phantom cooler, featuring removable 80cm fans and a huge heatsink armed with 8mm heatpipes. The Phantom cooler is said to be much quieter and cooler than the reference cooler and in the past we have found this to be very true when testing other models.
