[ Introduction ]

Today we are checking out a new version Nvidia GeForce GTX 570 graphics card from Gigabyte that is targeting the $350 price range. Nvidia hopes to take the improved efficiency of the new GF110 architecture recently demonstrated by the GTX 580, and package it as a more affordable product for the masses...

Coming off the recent success of the GeForce GTX 580 launch last month (November 9th, 2010) Nvidia has been quick to keep the ball rolling with another new product. The GeForce GTX 580 was everything the GF100 aka GTX 480 should have been, and with all 512 CUDA cores enabled Nvidia still managed to slightly lower power consumption levels as well as operating temperatures.

Although the GeForce GTX 580 came in $50 US above what the GTX 480 was retailing at, with an extra 25% performance the price premium was easy to justify. Still despite successfully proving its worth at $500 US, Nvidia was faced with a huge pricing gap that they quickly needed to fill. The first step in filling the void is the GeForce GTX 570, which as we mentioned above carries an MSRP of $350 US.

At this price point AMD currently has no real answer for the GeForce GTX 570. The Radeon HD 6870, which is a mid-range product, costs just $250 US while the aging Radeon HD 5870 is currently fetching slightly more at just $300 US, and then you have what’s left of the mighty dual-GPU Radeon HD 5970 supply selling for $500 US.

Therefore right now the closest thing AMD has to a GeForce GTX 570 competitor is the Radeon HD 5870 and we do not believe that matchup is going to fare well for AMD. AMD was originally expected to deliver its Cayman XT and Pro-based Radeon HD 6970 and 6950 graphics cards sometime during November, but they have postponed their arrival until next week for undisclosed reasons. If you don't mind holding off a few short weeks, the wait could be worth some savings or potentially more performance for the same dollars, depending on what AMD has reserved for us.

It is strange how AMD gave Nvidia a small window to beat them out the door, we cannot help but think they did not do this by choice. Those filling up Christmas stockings now with shiny new hardware will find it hard to hold off pulling the trigger on the GeForce GTX 570 as the thought of waiting another week or so for the Radeon HD 6950 might be too much.

For the impulse buyers amongst us Nvidia is only too happy to provide options and if the GeForce GTX 570 can live up to the benchmark set by the GTX 580, then we see no reason not to go ahead and snap one up now. Gigabyte has been kind enough to provide us with an early sample, so let’s check it out in more detail…

Awesome performance for the money. I am very excited to see how the GTX 560 goes as this is more in my price range. Good review though really enjoyed it.

Much faster than I was expecting and cheaper as well :)

Still I will wait till next week to see what AMD has to offer us.

I did not know 3DMark 11 was out yet. Thanks for including those results but In noticed there was no older graphics cards included. Does this new program only support DX11 cards?

I think the GTX 570 will be faster than the 6950 but I guess time will tell ;)

I dont know I think AMD might have Nvidia this time round for performance. I am expecting the 6950 to be faster but like you say time will tell :P

Where are the custom built cards? I have been checking the net every day but I have not come across any. Can you please review a custom card once they are released, I really want to buy something with upgraded cooling. Anyway thank you for the excellent review.
