At 5040x1050 the GeForce GTX 680 rendered 37fps regardless of the frame buffer, while the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition was 8% faster averaging 40fps.

Increasing the resolution to 7680x1600 when testing with Alan Wake we found that the larger 4GB frame buffer on the GeForce GTX 680 did make a difference, allowing the average frame rate to be increased by 33% from 12fps to 16fps. The Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition on the other hand was 19% faster than the GeForce GTX 680 4GB with an average of 19fps.

Clearly at this resolution when using the maximum in game quality settings gamers will need to use a pair of GeForce GTX 680 or Radeon HD 7970 graphics cards if they hope to achieve playable performance.

Again we found that at 5040x1050 the GeForce GTX 680 averaged 37fps regardless of the frame buffer capacity. The Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition was again faster, rendering 43fps for a 16% performance advantage over the GTX 680.

Now at 7680x1600 we find that the memory buffer needs to be larger than 2GB in Battlefield 3 as the GeForce GTX 680 2GB averaged just 4fps, making the 4GB version considerably faster with 16fps. Still the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition was 25% faster, averaging 20fps.

When testing Crysis 2 in the DirectX 11 mode we reduce the in-game quality settings from the ultra-preset to high for better performance. This allowed the GeForce GTX 680 in both 2GB and 4GB flavors to average 51fps at 5040x1050, which coincidently is the same average frame rate achieved by the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition graphics card.

At 7680x1600 the GeForce GTX 680 with 2GB and 4GB of memory averaged 25fps and it is likely that we would have to use the ultra-preset to see a difference in performance here. That said, using the ultra-preset saw the 4GB version of the GTX 680 average less than 10fps at this resolution which is why we opted to reduce the visual quality settings. This time the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition was 12% faster than the GeForce GTX 680.

Finally I have been waiting for a good review on a 4GB card. Pretty much everything I have come across so far only tested at 2560x1600. Nice results.

Hello, I've been gaming on my three 30' samsungs for quite some time until AMD started using the mini display ports on the 6990's and I have been lost since then. I would greatly appreciate some in depth advice/photo's of how you are getting that resolution off just one 7970. It has been a problem in my gaming life for too long and I am glad I stumbled onto your review.

Hi Carl, you need to use a pair of the mini-Display Ports and one of the DVI ports.

Hi! Looking for some help!

I currently max out the 1.5gb on my 2 580's at 2560x1600 very quickly in Skyrim with high res texture mods installed and then the game begins to jerk at times even at high frame rates.

I,m assuming I would also pass the 2gb limit easily!

So it's not just multi monitor setups I would assume that need more video memory.

Would it be that texture memory is just as important depending on what you are running?
