[ Introduction ]

Today we are finally getting the chance to check out HIS’s take on the AMD Radeon R9 290 series, with their R9 290X iPower IceQ X² Turbo and R9 290 iPower IceQ X² OC graphics cards. The company has held off releasing their trademark iPower IceQ X² series for this range, likely due to the excessive pricing of R9 290 cards over the past 6 months or so...

Although the R9 290X was released roughly six months ago now, HIS has held off from releasing custom versions using their IceQ technology, instead pushing reference cards all this time. That's unusual, but given the limited supply of Hawaii XT GPUs and the absurd pricing of R9 290 series cards due to crypto mining, there has been limited demand from gamers.

As pricing nears the original MSRP of $550 for the R9 290X and $400 for the R9 290, gamers are once again interested in the mighty R9 290 series and HIS plans to capitalize on that with its special iPower IceQ X² versions.

The Radeon R9 290 is an exceptional buy right now as cards are selling for the MSRP, finally! However the new HIS R9 290 iPower IceQ X² (non-OC version) is currently retailing for just $370 at Newegg.com, making it the cheapest R9 290 we know of, and at $50 below the MSRP it’s a steal. The OC version that we have does sadly cost considerably more at $450, yet that is still below the MSRP, making it one of the cheapest R9 290 graphics cards available right now.

Those hoping to snag a cheap HIS Radeon R9 290X won’t find themselves as lucky, as the standard non-overclocked version, being the R9 290X iPower IceQ X², costs $570, though that still makes it one of the more affordable examples with many priced over $600. As for the overclocked Turbo version that we have, well pricing for that doesn’t appear to be available yet.

Keeping all that in mind, let’s move on to check out these new HIS R9 290 series graphics cards in greater detail...

Shiny indeed. I have their 7970's in CF, upgrading to the 290's is very tempting and at those prices I will surely given in :)

Great to see some decent pricing on the 290 cards now. I am blown away by how cheap this HIS card is.

Finally prices near and even below to msrp. If only I didn't buy a GTX because I was sick of waiting. AMD might get my business next time around.
