[ Introduction ]

Today we are checking out Intel’s latest CPU architecture codenamed Haswell, marking the introduction of the 4th generation Intel Core processors. On the test bed we have the flagship model, the Core i7-4770K which will be tested on the Asrock Z87 Professional featuring the latest and greatest 8 Series chipset...

Those of you who visit TechSpot regularly will have no doubt spotted a ‘Haswell’ related news post on the front page more than once this year. These news posts have covered everything from model names to performance and battery life claims. A key focus has been on graphic performance, with rumors suggesting the performance will be 2 – 3 times that of HD 4000 graphics.

So what is Haswell? It is Intel’s 4th generation Core architecture which will see a major refresh of all Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 products in 2013. Whereas last year’s ‘Ivy Bridge’ was a 'tick' release, Haswell is a tock release and traditionally tock releases have been more significant. Intel did claim that Ivy Bridge was a “tick+” release due to the more significant overhaul to the graphics side of things.

Even so, despite providing up to twice as much graphics performance as Sandy Bridge in certain games, Ivy Bridge was still very underwhelming when it came to 3D rendering power. At best the HD Graphics 4000 of Ivy Bridge was a patch job, and even back when testing the Core i7-3770K last year we commented that things wouldn’t really start to improve until the arrival of Haswell.

So here we are, Haswell is ready to be unveiled, along with Intel’s latest on-die GPU solutions. Although today we will only be checking out the new HD 4600 Graphics, faster HD 5000 Graphics and Iris Graphics 5100 and 5200 solutions will also be available. Finally Intel will be making their most powerful integrated graphics solutions available on their lower-end processors designed for mobile devices, such as Ultrabooks.
