Today we have the Lian Li Tyr PC-X2000F home theater slash gaming PC case on hand to deliver an in-depth review. Unlike conventional computer cases the PC-X2000 series does not feature the external drive bays on the front of the case, while the size and shape is also quite unusual. However in true Lian Li form the Tyr PC-X2000F is a high quality aluminum case that takes a no frills approach...
A little over two years ago Lian Li released one of the most extreme HTPC (Home Theater Personal Computer) with the Tyr PC-X2000. What made the Tyr PC-X2000 was a combination of things such as its humongous size, which saw it stand 68cm tall, and let’s not forget the asking price of around $590 US on launch day. Still the Lian Li Tyr PC-X2000 was a case that delivered and when I got my chance to check it out this is what I had to say…
“The Lian Li Tyr PC-X2000 is a stunning looking case that is further enhanced by its unique and innovative design. The cooling performance of the Tyr PC-X2000 is also highly impressive, managing to move a significant amount of air all while creating very little noise. With a retail price of $590 US we expected it to be nothing short of incredible, and Lian Li has delivered in that sense.” Although we did really like the PC-X2000 we could not help but ask ourselves “who is going to use such a computer case?” Although Lian Li was targeting gamers and HTPC users, we felt at the time that there might have been better options out there for gaming. Then we have the home theater personal computer, which is what we used the Tyr PC-X2000 for, though we feel not everyone will find it as ideal as we did for our HTPC purposes (think tall). Nevertheless there was evidently a market for this high-end case and with the release of the new and improved Tyr PC-X2000F there clearly still is. Announced on the 11th May 2010 the new Tyr PC-X2000F is again aimed at HTPC and gaming users. However despite the various improvements that Lian Li has made to the design, this new version has been launched with a slightly more affordable price tag of $500 US. As much as we liked the original Tyr PC-X2000, evident by the fact that I am still using it as my HTPC case today, it did have a few minor flaws. The fan speed controller for example was hard to access as it was hidden behind the front panel, under the dust filter. Another problem we had with the fans was the cabling, none of them featured cable sleeves, which left them with an ordinary looking finish. Similarly, USB, Firewire, and audio cables from the I/O panel were beige and not black. And yes, I know we are nit picking, but at the same time you are buying the Ferrari of the case world. A far more serious issue concerned the case doors. Although they were quick and easy to remove using a single thumb screw, this method did prove to be problematic in the end. It seemed that the door was not secured enough by the single thumb screw, tending to vibrate a little bit, which was very annoying. This also proved problematic with cable management when there was more bulge than the screw could handle, this meant that the right case door would warp a bit, and without enough support there was nothing we could do to solve this. So then the original Tyr PC-X2000 was hardly a flawless execution and although some of the issues we had with the case were just minor, they were details that we felt should not to be overlooked on such an extremely expensive case. Having said all that, let's take a closer look at the new Lian Li Tyr PC-X2000F to see what has changed since looking at the original... |

Steve, I envy you for being able to work with this case. I would never spend that amount on a PC case. That said, I do like Lian Li designs. I am really impressed. |
