Today we are checking out an SSD designed specifically for power users and multimedia designers in mind. The RevoDrive 350 which has been developed by OCZ is said to be the ultimate storage solution for intensive workstation applications with maximum performance. Utilizing the PCI Express 2.0 x8 interface the RevoDrive 350 boasts read/write performance of 1.8 - 1.7GB/s...
OCZ released the RevoDrive 3 X2 back in 2011 and at the time it was the fastest SSD designed for desktop users that we had seen. Being that this was a PCI Express solution it eliminated the SATA bottleneck that most SSD’s still face today. Furthermore it offered RAID performance without the hassle.
![]() That said at the time we were disappointed with what the RevoDrive 3 X2 delivered. Given that the RevoDrive 3 X2 was essentially four Vertex 3 SSDs forged together on a single PCB, we were stunned to find it was less than two times faster than a single Vertex 3 in our real-world tests. This lead us to conclude with this… “In short, as awesome as a product like the OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2 seems, it simply has far too many short comings. Not only can custom RAID0 setups offer the same performance at a significant discount, but they are also far more flexible should a controller or memory chip die, as you can just remove the faulty drive” Now 3 years later OCZ is looking to replace the RevoDrive 3 X2 with something faster, the RevoDrive 350. Featuring a completely new design from the ground-up along with re-designed drivers, we are hoping the RevoDrive 350 can correct where the RevoDrive 3 X2 went wrong. Whereas the RevoDrive 3 X2 was limited to PCIe 2.0 x4 bandwidth the RevoDrive 350 has been upgraded to x8 bandwidth. OCZ say the new design is based on their enterprise-grade OCZ Z-Drive 4500, and given how that thing performs it can only be a good thing. Another big change comes down to the memory used, this time Toshiba’s NAND has been used which OCZ says is a more affordable option. While that may be the case the real reason is obviously due to the fact that OCZ is now owned by Toshiba. OCZ says that the RevoDrive 350 marks the completion of the Toshiba transition. |
