[ Introduction ]

Today we are checking out an SSD designed specifically for power users and multimedia designers in mind. The RevoDrive 3 X2 which has been developed by OCZ is said to be the ultimate storage solution for intensive workstation applications with maximum performance. Utilizing the PCI Express 2.0 interface the RevoDrive 3 X2 boasts read/write performance of 1.5 - 1.2GB/s...

The solid-state drive market continues to grow at a rapid pace and competition is as fierce as ever. While there was once just a few controllers worth picking from, half a dozen viable choices occupy the market now. The updated Marvell 88SS9174 controller used by the Crucial m4 and Intel SSD 510 Series has stirred things up, while we expect that the upcoming Samsung 830 Series will do the same.

Although a lot of attention is being garnered by these new products, the majority of newly released SSDs are still based on the renowned SandForce SF-2200 controller, as it provides some of the best performance seen from the current generation of SSD controllers.

Although there are more SandForce based drives than we care to count, the most notorious would have to be OCZ's Vertex 3. OCZ was quick to jump on the SandForce bandwagon, making the Vertex 3 among the first to ship with the second generation controller. Since then, the company has released many products based on the SF-2200, including the RevoDrive 3.

First announced back in October 28th 2010, the second generation RevoDrive X2 carried not one, but rather four SF-1200 controllers in RAID and boasted up to 120,000 IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second). It launched in capacities ranging from 100GB through 960GB. The 100GB model flaunted sustained write data transfer speeds of 690MB/s while sequential read speeds were claimed to be as high as 740MB/s.

As impressive as the second generation RevoDrive X2 was, the follow up model we are testing today completely blows it out of the water. Earlier this year, OCZ announced the RevoDrive 3 X2 range which would be based on the latest generation SandForce SF-2200 controllers.

The additional controllers boost sustained write speeds up to 1250MB/s with sequential read/write throughputs reaching 1500MB/s. Moreover, the RevoDrive 3 X2 is said to be capable of an incredible 230,000 IOPS.

Unlike traditional solid state drives, the RevoDrive 3 X2 is a PCI-Express SSD. That means it doesn't rely on the SATA interface, making it very different from previous products that we have reviewed. So let's dive in for a closer look...

Certainly nice performance for those who can afford it. I would like to see how two Vertex 3 240GB drives perform in RAID0.

Boot up performance and game loading is a real letdown, money could be better spent elsewhere.

Great product for benchmark freaks! For everyone else a Vertex 3 drive or maybe even two will suffice.
