Today we are checking out OCZ’s Vector 512GB SSD which was released late last year. 2012 was a big year for OCZ as it marked the introduction of their first in-house SSD, the Vector. Though even before the introduction of the Vector, OCZ were on a high with the release of their still very fast Vertex 4 SSD...
The Vertex 4 which we first tested mid-way through 2012 was the latest in a long line of Vertex SSDs. However unlike the previous few models it was not built using a SandForce controller but rather a Marvell controller driven by OCZ’s Indilinx firmware, which is why these drives were labelled “Indilinx Infused”.
Admittedly OCZ were very sneaky and lead everyone to believe that the Vertex 4 was powered by an Indilinx controller called Everest. Regardless of the controller used there was nothing devious about the performance, with sequential reads reaching 550MB/s and a random write IOPS rating of 85,000, making it one of the fastest SSDs available at the time. Still having purchased Indilinx back in 2011 OCZ still had little to show for their acquisition. That was of course until the Vector came along. Before then it had been three years since Indilinx released a brand new controller, making the Barefoot 3 a rather big deal. Having tested the 256GB model late last year we were impressed as the drive really delivered in terms of performance, price and as far as we can tell reliability. At a cost of $1.03 per gigabyte the 256GB version of the Vector was extremely good value. When looking at the cost per gigabyte the 128GB model is slightly more expensive at $1.09 per gigabyte while the largest 512GB model costs just 97c per gigabyte. Therefore we were keen to give the Vector 512GB a spin and compare it to the Samsung SSD 840 Pro 512GB which also costs 97c per gigabyte. Both are slightly more expensive than the old Vertex 4 512GB which costs just 93c per gigabyte, while Crucial’s m4 512GB can do even better at just 78c. So while we expect the Vector 512GB to be extremely fast, it still has a lot of competition to deal with. |

The price drop for these things last year was awesome. I really hope we see a similar drop this year. Still even at this price I am considering the 512GB Vector! |
