[ Introduction ]

Today Nvidia is unveiling their latest generation mid-range GPU based on the Maxwell architecture known as the GeForce GTX 960. Priced at just $200 the GTX 960 enters the market at a lower price than the GPU it is replacing, the GTX 760. Yet the GTX 960 is said to be faster and more efficient...

Nvidia’s latest generation GeForce 900 family was introduced in September 2014. At the head of the family is the GeForce GTX 980, the world’s fastest single GPU. Based on the Maxwell architecture, the latest generation GeForce GPUs have been built using an entirely new architecture that's been designed to deliver 2x the performance/watt of the previous generation.

The GTX 900 series also brought about new graphics features such as NVIDIA Voxel Global Illumination (VXGI), Multi-Frame sampled AA (MFAA), and Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR). Maxwell GPUs also support Microsoft’s upcoming DirectX 12 API. With the impending arrival of next-generation DirectX 12 games, PC gaming is poised for another exciting year.

The September launch saw the arrival of not just the GeForce GTX 980 but also the GTX 970, which is arguably the more interesting product. This is because the GTX 980 costs almost 70% more than the GTX 970 and delivers less than 20% more performance. Even on paper the GTX 980 doesn’t really make sense as it only boasts 23% more cores.

That made the GTX 970 the obvious choice at $330 and it also out competes the Radeon R9 290X by offering considerably better power consumption figures. As good as the GTX 970 is, it still isn’t a feasible option for most gamers as the majority spend $200 or less on their GPU.

Therefore Nvidia has developed what they call ‘the sweet spot GPU’ with the GeForce GTX 960. It’s called the sweet spot because this GPU delivers so much performance for the dollar. Historically these sweet spot GPUs have been the most cost effective way to get a high-end gaming experience.

Over the years, Nvidia has released a number of extremely popular GPUs in this class, including the GeForce GTX 460, 560, 660 and 760. For evidence one simply needs to consult the Steam Hardware Survey, of the 60 something classes of GeForce GPU’s included, the number one and two sports are taken by the GTX 660 and GTX 760.

The GTX 660 is also the most popular GPU used by MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) gamers; games like Heroes of Newerth, League of Legends and DOTA 2; which is the most popular genre of gaming worldwide.
