The Patriot Supersonic Magnum 128GB is the best example of a compact high-speed large-capacity storage device that we have seen. The ability to read data at 200MB/s is incredible for a thumb drive, while the 120MB/s write performance is also very impressive.
When testing the Supersonic Magnum we found that the drive easily lived up to the 200MB/s read speed, achieving 202.4MB/s in our large single file test. The multiple small file read tests also saw the Supersonic Magnum provide a throughput of roughly 200MB/s. The write performance varies depending on the data you are copying to the drive. When testing we found that large files will allow the Supersonic Magnum to reach its claimed write speed of 120MB/s. However multiple small files do slow the Supersonic Magnum right down, and in our program write test the throughput averaged just 24.9MB/s.
Still, it is more likely that potential users are going to want a product like the Supersonic Magnum for copying large files rather than loads of small files. When compared to the original Patriot Supersonic thumb drive the Supersonic Magnum was almost always more than 50% faster, in most cases more like 70% faster. When comparing the 64GB models the Supersonic Magnum costs just 20% more, which makes the price premium easy to justify given the added performance. That said, these high-speed USB 3.0 thumb drives are still far from affordable, and as we mentioned earlier users are paying the same kind of dollar per gigabyte ratio as you would expect for a high-end SSD.
That alone makes the Patriot Supersonic an enthusiast product, as there are certainly cheaper ways to get your hands on a large capacity thumb drive. For example 64GB drives start at around $80, that said do not expect to see the kind of performance capable by the Supersonic Magnum. In fact USB 3.0 thumb drives are still not that easy to come by, with just a handful of options available. Furthermore, most of the better examples out there only boast read/write performance of about 130-80MB/s, making the Patriot Supersonic Magnum something special. Finally, we highly recommend the Patriot Supersonic Magnum 128GB to anyone seeking a compact thumb drive capable of SSD-like performance in a 64Gb or 128GB storage capacity. |
