Patriot Memory now offers an extensive range of DDR3 memory modules with their latest Viper Extreme and Gamer 2 series covering a wide range of timings and frequencies. Today we are taking a look at the PXD38G1866ELK and PG238G1600ELKA, which are both dual-channel 8GB kits...
The Patriot Viper Extreme family of high performance memory modules was announced October 19th, 2010. Designed using a custom heatspreader which uses copper for improved efficiency, the initial 4GB and 8GB kits were designed to operate at 2000MHz on the Intel P55 (LGA1156) platform.
Less than a month later Patriot bolstered the new Viper Extreme series with four new products. Then on December 29th, 2010 the Viper Extreme Division 2 series was announced along with the new G2 (Gamer 2) series. Rated at speeds up to 2133 MHz, the Patriot Viper Xtreme Division 2 series memory kits are Intel certified and designed to provide maximum overclocking headroom for Sandy Bridge processors. As such the Viper Xtreme Division 2 series is made up of dual-channel kits offering capacities of 4GB and 8GB. The G2 Series, the successor to the popular G Series, comes in a wide variety of speeds ranging from 1333MHz to 1600MHz. However, its relaxed timings make this budget orientated memory, which is better value for gamers when compared to the more expensive low-latency Viper Xtreme Division 2 series. Currently the Viper Xtreme Division 2 “PXD38G1866ELK” kit is selling for $95 and while it offers the same 8GB capacity as the Patriot Gamer 2 “PG238G1600ELKA” memory, it costs nearly 80% more. Still, it does guarantee a higher operating frequency with tighter timings, and for overclockers that's worth paying a price premium for. With that said, let’s take a closer look at each kit... |
