[ Introduction ]

Today we are checking out a tiny Mini-ITX case with just an 11 liter capacity that is capable of housing dual slot graphics cards such as the Radeon HD 4770. The new Silverstone SG06 is designed to help make the Mini-ITX a little more exciting, and we found that it does just that...

Earlier this year I set out to build myself an ultra portable gaming system that wouldn’t suffer from all the usual problems. Typically when building a compact and portable gaming computer a few things have to be sacrificed, namely performance. Not only do small computer cases restrict the range of hardware available, but they also make it very difficult to keep whatever high-end hardware you manage to fit inside cool.

For my build the Silverstone SG04 was the case of choice, as this compact mATX case can house full length graphics cards such as the GeForce GTX 295. Furthermore, this impressive little case somehow manages to include a pair of front mounted 120mm fans, which really enabled me to use the extreme GeForce GTX 295 graphics card as I had a means of keeping it cool. However it was the availability of Micro ATX Core i7 motherboards that made this system so special.

In a case that stands just 36cm tall and 34cm deep, I was able to install a Core i7 965 Extreme Edition processor, 12GB of DDR3-1600 memory, GeForce GTX 295 graphics card and a pair of SSD’s in RAID0. This made for a pretty impressive little gaming system and while I certainly have no need to upgrade (as there is nothing to upgrade to), could I go smaller again?

As it stands there is no possible way of making a computer with these specifications smaller. However, if you were to sacrifice a little performance for something a little more mainstream, I think it is possible to go even smaller. I think this is possible as I now have the new Silverstone SG06, which is designed to support Mini-DTX and Mini-ITX motherboards. When compared to a Micro-ATX case, which has a capacity of roughly 23 liters, the SG06 has a storage capacity of less than half, with a volume to just 11 liters.

Nevertheless, in keeping with the spirit of the Sugo name, Silverstone has ensured that the case is capable of housing many standard components, while keeping everything cool. The SG06 is actually based on the SG05 design, and technically both cases are identical, the SG06 has simply had a face lift and we believe it is a more stylish case. With that in mind let’s take a closer look…
