[ Introduction ]

Today we are checking out a new and very affordable single bay NAS product from Synology known as the DiskStation DS115j. This NAS device is ideal for those that want the convenience of network attached storage without the typically high price tag that goes along with it. Providing the same functionality as the bigger more expensive models, the DS115j certainly has a lot to offer...

The once niche home market space has grown into a major product sector, with over a dozen companies all competing for their slice of the action.

The Battle for the best HTPC replacement NAS device is currently being fought out in the $400 - $800 price range, while 6-bay and larger home storage devices are priced upwards of $700.

Not everyone needs 6-bays, 4-bays or even 2-bays from their NAS device and with hard drive capacities starting to grow again, a single bay can offer a considerable amount of storage space now.

For that reason products such as the new Synology DiskStation DS115j are becoming increasingly popular. It is now possible to purchase a 6TB hard drive for under $300, and with the DS115j that means creating a 6TB NAS server for less than $400.

Tailor-made for the home environment, Synology claims that the DS115j only consumes 3.85 watts when the hard drive is in hibernation mode and below 13 watts under full load. They also say its noise dampening design makes it very quiet compared to competing NAS devices, with a noise level of just 18.1 dB(A).

The DS115j also serves as a full-featured network video recorder to leverage Synology Surveillance Station. It comes with 2 free IP camera licenses and supports up to 5 cameras, making it an ideal surveillance solution for homes and SOHOs.

Synology product manager Nicole Lin said that "With DS115j, home users can now enjoy the rich data sharing and multimedia streaming features offered by Synology at an entry-level price point”.

With a 28% speed bump over its predecessor the DS115j is rated for a read speed of 103MB/s. The built-in Floating-Point Unit (FPU) CPU helps enhance performance of multimedia applications, such as speeding up thumbnail generation of photos, and thus ensures optimal multimedia experiences.

Thank I am getting one. Not sure if the 6TB prices will fall anytime soon. Might just start with a 4TB drive, seems better value.
