Today we are checking out the Synology DiskStation DS713+ as well as the optional DX513 expansion unit. The DS713+ is powered by an Intel Atom D2700 dual-core processor and features a 1GB memory buffer while the DX513 expands storage from 2-bays to a more impressive 7-bays. These hardware specifications should make the DS713+ quite snappy and the ability to support Link Aggregation should help maximize performance of the dual bay NAS device...
Last year Synology began rolling out their DSx13 series and in the process added a new small to medium business flagship model, the DS2413+. This new product features dual Gigabit LAN controllers for Link Aggregation support, boosting read performance to over 200MB/s.
This high-end model also features hot-swappable SATA bays, as well as the ability to significantly expand storage using the DX513 and DX1211 expansion units. The DS2413+ can be coupled with a DX1211 expansion unit, allowing for a total of 24 hard drives, or 96TB. The DS2413+ is an impressive product but at $1800 there is no denying that users are paying top dollar for it. Then factor in the cost for the expansion unit, DX1211 at $1300 per unit or $530 for the DX513, and you start to appreciate how costly such a setup can be. The problem is not every business is going to require a 12-bay NAS device right away and even the previous generation 5-bay DS1512+ can be considered overkill for many, at least initially. Synology recognized this fact some time ago when they released the DS710+ back in February of 2010, a dual bay device that can be expanded to support 7 drives using the DX510. The DS710+ was a truly high-performance NAS device that cost just $500 due to its dual-bay design. The DS710+ was later replaced by the DS712+ in October of 2011, which brought with it support for Link Aggregation and a faster processor. Roughly a year later the DS713+ was announced in November 2012 just two months ago now. Well, finally we have a sample on hand and we are keen to see what Synology’s most powerful 2-bay NAS has to offer... |

Looks good - like the last few models but I am not sure its worth $100 more than the DS712. I expect they will phase that model out soon and drop the DS713 down in price. At least I hope that's what they will do  |

I agree looks very good but why is there no USB 3.0 on the front for gods sake??? Other than that the software side of things looks amazing. |

Thanks for the review it was very in-depth. I would like to buy the DS2413+ but I want to know more about the true performance before I buy it. Are you going to review this model as well? |

good little box. I really like how the storage can be expanded down the track without having to shelve the unit. |
