[ Introduction ]

Today we are taking a look at how the latest ATI and Nvidia graphics cards perform in what will likely be this year’s best selling game, The Sims 3. This article is designed to give you an idea of how high-end graphics cards will perform in this game using the very best quality settings and the results were surprising...

The Sims 3 is likely to be the best selling game of the year, based on how previous versions have performed. Based on the Sims franchise, which was originally created by Maxis, this latest version is set to be the best yet. Unlike previous versions, the houses and neighborhoods are seamless, allowing players to explore and interact with their neighborhood without loading time.

Next week the game will be officially released after much delay, as it was initially scheduled for February and later got delayed till June. Basically EA was afraid that they would not have enough time to market the game to the world by the original deadline. Furthermore, with the tough economic times, people are making wiser choices on how to spend their money, and it is more important than ever for EA to really sell this title.

Although EA claims that the delay was to give them more time to tune and polish the game, we find this all a bit humorous. When was the last time EA released a game that was even remotely polished? If they did, we missed it, and based on our initial impressions of the game it’s not all that polished, at least in terms of performance.

The Sims is not really a game that we would invest much time in, not because it’s a bad game, but because it is simply not the kind of game we play. That said, we did take a look at the second installment in The Sims series, and right away could not help but notice how laggy the game was. Even with relatively high-end hardware, the game seemed very choppy, and after a short period we found this just too annoying.

When we got our hands on The Sims 3 our first priority was to see how it handled the latest and greatest ATI and Nvidia graphics cards. While this latest version of The Sims is more visually impressive than the last, it is not exactly in the same league as games such as Far Cry 2 or Crysis.

The textures are rather bland, while the shadows and lighting are quite simple. There is not even that much detail, at least until you get inside the houses. Still, we want to see how this upcoming blockbuster will perform with the latest ATI and Nvidia graphics cards…
