Today we have the yet to be released Thermaltake DuOrb Extreme which is designed to cool a huge range of ATI and Nvidia graphics cards. More importantly, support for the latest graphics cards also exists, making the new DuOrb Extreme an attractive product. However it was the performance that truly impressed us... Thermaltake is a company that is constantly looking to improve on their designs and in the past we have seen several revisions of a single product come to light. A perfect example would be the BigTyp or Big Typhoon, which has gone through countless revisions which improve upon price and features. ![]() Some time ago now we saw Thermaltake offer their DuOrb cooler design in the form of a VGA cooler. Priced at $45 US, the Thermaltake DuOrb VGA cooler provided us with a decent level of performance when compared to the single slot cooler of the GeForce 8800 GT. Still, for a dual slot cooler the DuOrb performance is a little lack luster by today’s standards. Furthermore, without the ability to adjust the fan speed in any way, we found the DuOrb to be a little too loud. Therefore it came as little surprise to learn that Thermaltake is taking a second pass at the DuOrb VGA cooler with the new “DuOrb Extreme”, codename CLG0119. This new and improved version is bigger and quieter, as it attempts to improve on the flaws of the original. The DuOrb Extreme was announced in March at CeBIT 2009 which was held in Hanover, Germany. Now some 4 months later we have a sample, though the product does not appear to have gone to market just yet so pricing is a little unclear. This newly constructed version consists of a copper base, four copper heat pipes, and two semicircular radiators, constructed from a set of thin aluminum plates. The DuOrb Extreme is also equipped with a pair of low-noise 90mm fans, which have a patented blade design called “Scurve Blade” (The possibility of changing the speed of rotation of both propellers). Thermaltake has also improved the compatibility of the DuOrb Extreme, allowing it to work with a much wider range of ATI and Nvidia graphics cards. The original DuOrb VGA cooler only supported a very limited number of graphics cards. However by including a second mounting bracket system, the DuOrb Extreme can now be installed on more high-end products such as the GeForce GTX 285 and Radeon HD 4890. |
