Today we are taking a quick look at the multiplayer performance using various high-end graphics cards in the new Wolfenstein game. This is the sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein, which has been built using the id Tech 4 engine, a heavily modified version we might add… It is interesting to note that the new Wolfenstein game, which is just being released now, has been built using id Software's id Tech 4 game engine. This is interesting as games such as Doom 3, which was released way back in August of 2004, featured the same game engine. Then the following year Quake 4 was released, again using the id Tech 4 game engine. ![]() Although Wolfenstein is using a rather old game engine, it has undergone several modifications which include depth of field effects, post processing effects, Havok physics, soft shadowing, as well as the addition of a supernatural realm, called The Veil. When in The Veil the player has access to certain special abilities, such as the power to slow down time, to get around obstacles that exist in the real world, or even to be able to defeat enemies that have an otherwise impassable shield. This article will be looking at the multiplayer performance of Wolfenstein rather than the single player aspect. I personally do not care much for single player action and much prefer gaming with friends, so I have been very eager to see not only how Wolfenstein plays, but also how it performs using various graphics cards. For this article we have recorded our own 6-player demo featuring lots of action and the use of The Veil, which seems to strain the hardware quite a lot. |
