Today we take a look at the hugely anticipated Accelero Xtreme VGA cooler from Arctic-Cooling. This new high-end VGA cooler comes in two versions, allowing support for both Radeon HD 2900XT/Pro and GeForce 8800 GTX/GTS/Ultra graphics cards. Although there are already a number of after-market VGA coolers designed for these products, none are quite like the new Accelero Xtreme!
Recently we put the new Arctic-Cooling Accelero Xtreme 2900 to the test, comparing it to the standard Radeon HD 2900XT cooler, and the results were impressive. The Accelero Xtreme 2900 was 15% more efficient when compared to the standard cooler, while reducing the operating volume to a whisper. This triple slot, triple fan VGA cooler costs just $50 US which is quite amazing given the size and quality of the cooler.
Needless to say the Accelero Xtreme 2900 impressed us immensely, though at the same time we found the product a little confusing. This was largely due to the fact that the Accelero Xtreme 2900 was only compatible with the Radeon HD 2900XT and Pro graphics cards. The Radeon HD 2900XT was released on the 14th May 2007 while the Pro version was released on the 25th of September 2007.
The problem with that is the Radeon HD 2900XT and Pro are no longer available, as they have been replaced with the Radeon HD 3850 and 3870 graphics cards. So realistically the 2900XT was on sale for 6 months or less, and now that it is no longer available Arctic-Cooling produce a high-performance VGA cooler supporting it. Thankfully using the same design, Arctic-Cooling has also released a version of the Accelero Xtreme for the GeForce 8800 GTX, Ultra and GTS (G80) graphics cards.
Again, although the GeForce 8800 GTX and Ultra sales have come to a screaming halt and the GTS (G80) 640MB/320MB graphics cards are no longer available, the Accelero Xtreme 8800 makes a lot more sense. Despite the fact that the GeForce 8800 GT and GTS 512 are the new boys in town, there are still a huge amount of users out there running GeForce 8800 GTX and GTS (640MB/320MB) graphics cards that would be interested in a product such as the Arctic-Cooling Accelero Xtreme 8800.
